Understanding the Aluminium Surface Treatment Process

Aluminium frames often fade and become chalky while the rest of your property still looks well maintained. This white film is usually oxidisation, which can reduce street appeal and affect how your home presents. Replacement is not always necessary.

Protect Shield uses a proven five-step aluminium window frame restoration process to treat oxidisation, then seals the surface with a UV-stable clear coat. For most homes, the work is completed in one day and often takes just three to five hours, depending on the size and condition of the frames.

Pricing is fixed after inspection. The coating is expected to last more than 10 years, and the work is backed by a five-year written guarantee.

Five-step aluminium restoration done at your place

Your frames stay in place. There is no removal of joinery, and masking is limited to the areas that need it rather than wrapping your home in plastic. After a site visit, a fixed quote is confirmed before work begins.

The work follows a set process and is typically completed in one day:

  1. Light sanding and cleaning to remove surface build-up and chalking
  2. Application of an oxidisation remover to lift oxidisation and often restore much of the original colour
  3. Neutralising to return the surface to a pH-neutral state, followed by drying
  4. Application of the first UV-stable, water-based clear coat, which air dries in about 20 minutes
  5. Application of the second coat, followed by removal of any residue from the glass and a final clean-down
All work is carried out on site, with attention kept to the frames and immediate edges. In many cases, you do not need to be at home. Windows are typically left slightly ajar to support the process.

Oxidisation removal and UV protection for New Zealand

New Zealand frames take a hammering from UV exposure and coastal air. Some imported coatings are not rated for these conditions and can fail early. Protect Shield uses a proven Australian system that has performed in harsh, high-UV environments for more than 15 years.

The coating is water-based, UV-stable and free from harsh chemicals.

Because it air dries quickly, work can often be scheduled around changeable weather rather than relying on a long, clear run. Protect Shield holds exclusive New Zealand rights to this system, so it is not a generic, off-the-shelf product.

Quick, tidy and focused restoration

This system avoids the extensive masking and multi-day on-site disruption associated with some repainting methods. Preparation is limited to what is necessary to achieve a sound surface. After coating, any marks on the glass are removed and everything is checked before sign-off.

No special maintenance is required beyond normal cleaning.

The focus remains on aluminium frames, doors, garage doors and related joinery, rather than general house painting.

Restoration compared to repainting or replacement

Restoring frames at the right time, often around 10 to 12 years, can help prevent deterioration to the point where repainting becomes the only option. Some repainting projects can cost up to $25,000, while full replacement can be even more expensive.

This restoration approach typically costs around one third of the price of replacement, with three-bedroom, single-storey homes starting from $1,500. All pricing is provided upfront and fixed once quoted.

Frequently asked questions for The Protect Shield Process

Each stage is completed on site: inspection and fixed quote, cleaning and prep, oxidisation removal, neutralising, two UV-stable clear coats then final checks and glass clean-up. For most homes, the job is completed the same day.

Frames showing chalking and fading are often restored in place. The powder coat condition is checked during inspection and the prep level is matched to what is needed. Expected results are discussed during quoting. For more background, visit the About section.

Oxidisation removal targets the chalky residue, dullness and patchy colour that come with surface breakdown. If the powder coat is too far gone in areas, that is flagged before work starts. For other joinery, see the aluminium joinery restoration page.

Oxidised frames are treated at the source, not covered over. Cleaning, light sanding, oxidisation removal, neutralising and the clear coats work together to slow further fading. Normal washing helps. For larger sites, see the commercial aluminium frame restoration page.

Protection is expected to last 10 years plus depending on sun exposure, location and cleaning. A five-year written warranty applies. Usual gentle cleaning is recommended and harsh or abrasive methods should be avoided. For exterior aluminium restoration packages or to arrange a quote, see the Contact page.
